나눔이란 마치 꽃을 피우는 것과 같다. 처음에는 작고 작은 꽃잎이 하나씩 피어나지만, 서로의 노력과 선의가 계속해서 쌓이면 그 꽃은 점점 더욱 아름다운 향기를 만방에 가득 채워낸다. 그리고 마치 꽃잎 하나하나가 서로를 끌어안듯, 우리가 나눔을 통해 상호작용할 때, 우리는 더욱 서로를 바라보게 된다. 하여, 우리가 ‘나눔’을 선택할 때에 우리의 삶은 더욱 풍요로워지며 더욱 의미 있는 방향으로 나아갈 수 있게 된다. 누군가의 어려움을 덜어주고 기쁨을 함께 나누는 일, 그로써 세상을 더욱 따뜻하고 아름답게 만들어가는 일의 참된 가치란 무엇인지를 오랜 시간 국내·외를 가리지 않는 꾸준한 나눔 활동으로 부처님의 자비 정신을 실천하고 있는 마이산 탑사 주지 진성스님의 이야기를 통해 알아보자.

나눌수록 풍성해지는 삶, 마음의 깊이를 더하다

전북 진안 마이산에 위치한 탑사는 자연과 문화가 조화롭게 어우러진 곳으로, 그 아름다움으로 인해 국내·외로부터 매해 수많은 관광객들이 찾는 명소 중 하나다. 특히, 이갑룡(李甲用 1860∼1957·효령대군 16대손) 거사가 무려 30여 년 동안 일일이 손으로 108개의 돌탑을 쌓아올리며 담아낸 ‘억조창생(億兆蒼生) 구제’에의 기원은 지금까지도 많은 이들에게 감동과 함께 세상을 더 아름다운 곳으로 변화시키는 ‘나눔의 진정한 가치’를 되새기게 만들고 있다.

마이산탑사 주지 진성스님이 오랜 세월 쉼 없이 행해온 수많은 사회봉사활동은 바로 이러한 토대 위에서 이뤄져 온 것이다. 그리고 그 대표적인 예가 바로 1993년부터 시작된 ‘갑룡장학회’다. 갑룡장학회는 진안군 자원봉사센터를 통해 봉사활동에 헌신적으로 참여하는 이들을 대상으로 마일리지를 적립, 이에 따라 매년 일정 인원을 선발해 총 1,000여만 원의 장학금을 차등 지급하는 방식으로 운영된다. 그 기준이 봉사활동에의 적극적인 참여로 정해져 있기에 지역사회 의 어려운 이들에 대한 따뜻한 관심과 손길이 크게 확산되는 데에 기여했다는 평가를 받고 있으며, 조부모와 부모 뿐 아니라 수여 대상자인 학생들까지도 함께 마일리지를 적립할 수 있어, 우리 후대에게도 나눔의 가치가 대물림되는 긍정적인 효과를 낳고 있기도 하다. 실제로도 장학금을 받은 학생들이 이를 사용해 또 다른 나눔을 이어가는 모습을 보여 많은 이들을 흐뭇하게 만들기도 했다고 한다. 이에 대해 진성스님은 “나눔이란 그 자체로도 기쁨이지만, 그 기쁨을 받은 사람에게서도 또 다시 비롯된다는 것을 갑룡장학회 활동을 통해 체감하고 있습니다. 자라나는 세대에게 더 나은 교육환경을 제공하고자 시작했던 일이 진정으로 이웃과 주변 사람들을 생각하고 배려하는 마음을 키워내는 것으로까지 발전한 것 같아 큰 보람을 느낍니다”라고 말했다. 

진안군 자원봉사센터와 함께 백미·연탄나눔, 음식봉사, 지역축제 개최, 사랑의 집 지어주기 등 다양한 활동을 펼쳐온 진성스님은 지난 2021년도 ‘진안군 자원봉사센터’의 이사장으로 추대되어 취임하기도 했다. 진성스님은 “현재 센터는 43개 각 지역 단체들과 교류 협약을 맺고 있으며, 이를 기반으로 지역 내 뿐 아니라 해외에서도 다양한 사회공헌활동을 펼치고 있습니다. 진안군의 전체 인구가 2만 6천명인데 매년 자원봉사에 참여하는 수가 6천 명이 넘을 정도로 나눔의 문화가 뿌리 깊게 자리 내린 지역이 진안군이며, 저희 센터는 2년 연속 대통령 표창을 수상할 정도로 전국에서도 손꼽히는 모범봉사센터로 자리매김하고 있기도 합니다”라고 설명하며, 봉사할 수 있는 기회, 봉사할 수 있는 여건을 만드는 데에 힘써, 더욱 많은 이들에게 봉사와 나눔의 가치를 전파하고 싶다는 바람을 전했다. 이밖에도 진성스님은 2013년 탑밴드 봉사단을 창단, 양로원이나 군부대 등의 위문공연도 진행하고 있으며, 2001년 사형수를 옥바라지하면서 인연을 맺은 이후 교도소 교정협의회 회장을 역임했으며, 현재는 명예회장을 맡아 꾸준한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 

“나눔으로써 지극해지는 기쁨, 세상 곳곳에 사랑과 행복을 전하고파”

진성스님의 활동 중 또 하나 주목을 받는 것은 해외 나눔 활동이다. 지난 3월 붓다봉사단을 이끌고 베트남 닥락성을 방문한 진성스님은 오지에 위치한 응우엔바응옥 초등학교에 태양광 정수시설을 준공해 앞으로 학생들이 안전하고 깨끗한 물을 마실 수 있도록 도왔고, 또 대부분 먼 거리를 통학하고 있는 학생들을 위해 자전거 120대를 전달했다. 그 외에도 학생들이 공부하는 데에 필요한 학용품과 여러 생필품, 장난감 등 4천여 만원 상당의 물품을 전달했다.

이에 대해 진성스님은 “50~60년대 우리나라는 전쟁이 휩쓸고 간 참화로 세계에서 가장 가난한 나라 중 하나였습니다. 하지만 오늘날의 대한민국은 ‘구호를 받는 국가’에서 ‘구호를 주는 국가’로 놀랍게 성장했습니다. 2010년경 한국불교 태고종 총무원에서 재경부장을 맡고 있던 저는 ‘이제는 우리도 다른 나라를 도와주는 것에 힘써야 하지 않을까’란 생각에 해외공헌활동이 중심이 되는 ‘나누우리 봉사단’의 설립을 주도했고, 아이티 지진피해 복구, 라오스 초등학교 교사 건립, 캄보디아 우물관정 설치 등 국제구호사업에 적극 참여해왔습니다. 그러던 2018년 베트남에 거주하는 라이따이한 2세들의 아픔에 주목하게 됐고, 라이따이한 아이들이 다니는 학교에 정수기를 설치해주는 것으로 인연을 맺게 되었습니다. 이후 베트남 학교들에 정수시설을 설치해주는 활동에 뜻을 모아 ‘붓다봉사단’을 결성, ‘부처님의 감로수를 어린이들에게 나눔으로써 사랑과 용서로 행복을 전하는 부처님의 자비가 이곳에 흐른다’와 ‘자전거로 시원하게 달리며 아름다운 세상을 보자’는 슬로건를 목표로 삼고 해외복지나눔활동을 진행했습니다”라고 설명했다. 

그 중에서도 2018년 전북도와 자매결연을 맺은 베트남 닥락성에서 나눔활동을 추진해오던 진성스님은 2020년 갑작스레 발발한 코로나19로 인해 해외로의 이동이 어려워지면서 곤란을 겪기도 했으나, 매년 500만 원의 장학금과 100대의 자전거를 보내주는 일을 계속하며 인연을 끈을 놓지 않아왔었다. 그리고 코로나19의 여파가 어느 정도 사그라든 2022년 11월, 베트남 현지에 방문하며 태양광 정수시설 설치를 재개하겠다는 협약을 맺고 돌아온 진성스님은 앞서 언급한 것처럼 지난 3월 초에 베트남을 찾아가 이 약속을 지켰다. 
이는 2018년도부터 진행했던 정수시설 설치 공사를 4번째 진행한 것으로, 코로나로 잠시 주춤했던 정수시설 설치에 다시 박차를 가하기 시작했다. 
진성스님은 “이번 태양광 정수시설 설치는 일시적인 지원이 아니라, 전기료에 대한 부담 없이 오랫동안 현지 학생들과 지역 주민들에게 도움이 될 수 있는 일이라는 점에서 꼭 이뤄내고 싶은 숙원이었습니다. 또한, 그 일이 과거 우리나라가 받았던 도움에 대해 은혜를 갚는 일이자, 앞으로 한국-베트남 간의 민간교류를 활성화시키는 데에 보탬이 되길 바라는 마음이었습니다”라며, “앞으로도 베트남과의 이러한 인연을 계속 이어나가고, 또 넓혀나갈 계획입니다. 아울러 나눔에 대한 더 좋은 생각, 더 나은 방법을 항상 고민하고 배우며, 생의 마지막까지 봉사와 나눔을 멈추지 않는 것이 제 바람입니다”라고 말했다. 이러한 진성스님의 노력으로 인해 나눔의 소중함과 행복을 더 많은 사람들이 느낄 수 있기를 바라며, 앞으로도 이어질 진성스님의 소중한 인연에 깊은 감사의 말을 전한다.

The Value of Sharing that Changes the World, Blossoming with an Awake Mind

Sharing is blooming a flower. At first, small petals bloom one by one, but as our efforts and good intentions accumulate, the flower gradually fills the air with a more beautiful fragrance. And just as each petal embraces one another, when we interact through sharing, we look at each other more deeply. Therefore, when we choose 'sharing,' our lives become more abundant and can move in a more meaningful direction. Let's find out the true value of helping someone's difficulties and share happiness together, which makes the world warmer and more beautiful through the story of Ven. Jinseong, the abbot. He has been practicing the Buddha's spirit of compassion through steady sharing activities both domestically and internationally for a long time.

The more you share, the richer your life becomes, adding depth to your heart.

Located in Mt. Maisan in Jinan, Jeollabuk-do, Tap-sa is a place where nature and culture harmonize. Its beauty attracts many tourists from both domestic and foreign countries every year. In particular, the origin of "Eokjochangsaeng Guje",  which was built by Lee Gabryong (1860-1957, the 16th descendant of the Hyoryeongdaegun), who painstakingly piled up 108 stone towers by his bare hand for over 30 years, still continues to inspire many people with the true value of "sharing" that makes the world a more beautiful place.

Ven. Jin Seong, abbot of Maisan Tap-sa, has carried out numerous social service activities without rest for many years on the this foundation. One representative example is the 'Gabryong Scholarship Association', which started in 1993. The Gabryong Scholarship Association operates by accumulating mileage for those who participate in volunteer activities through the Jinan Volunteer Center, and selects a certain number of students every year to provide differential scholarships of about 10 million won. As the selection standard is determined by active participation in volunteer activities, it is receiving evaluation that it has contributed to spreading warm attention and touches to those in difficult situations in the community. In addition, it has a positive effect of passing on the value of sharing to future generations, as even grandparents, parents, and the recipients(students) can accumulate mileage together. In fact, it is said that seeing the students using it to continue other acts of sharing has made many people proud. Regarding this, Ven. Jin Seong said, "Sharing itself is joy, but I am also experiencing that sharing arises again from the person who received that joy, through Gabryong Scholarship Association activities. I feel a great sense of reward that the activities we started to provide a better educational environment for the growing generation has developed into fostering a heart that thinks and cares about neighbors around us."

Ven. Jin Seong, who has carried out various activities such as distributing rice and coal, serving food, holding local festivals, and building a house of love in collaboration with the Jinan-gun Volunteer Center, was appointed as the chairman of the center in 2021. Ven. Jin Seong explained, "The center has signed cooperation agreements with 43 local organizations and is carrying out various social contribution activities not only in this community but also overseas. Jinan-gun, with a total population of 26,000, is a region where the culture of sharing is deeply rooted, with more than 6,000 people participating in volunteer activities every year. Our center is also firmly established as a exemplary volunteer center recognized throughout Korea, having received the Presidential Commendation for two consecutive years." He expressed his desire to create more opportunities and conditions for volunteering to spread the values of volunteering and sharing to more people. In addition, Ven. Jin Seong founded a top band volunteer group in 2013 and has performed goodwill concerts for nursing homes and military bases since then. He served as the chairman of the correctional institution council after forming a relationship with a death row inmate in 2001, and is currently carrying out activities as as the honorary chairman.

"Joy is perfected by sharing, Hoping to spread love and happiness throughout the world"

Another noteworthy activity of Ven. Jinseong is his overseas sharing activities. In March of last year, leading the Buddha Volunteer Group, he visited Dak Lak province in Vietnam and completed the construction of a solar-powered water filtration system at the Nguyen Ba Ngoc Elementary School, helping students to have safe and clean drinking water. In addition, they donated 120 bicycles for students who mostly commute long distances to school. They also donated items worth 40 million won, including school supplies, daily necessities, toys, and other items needed for students to study and live. 

Regarding this, Ven. Jin Sung said, "In the 1950s and 1960s, Korea was one of the world's poorest countries due to the ravages of war. However, today's South Korea has developed remarkably from a 'relief recipient' to a 'relief donor'. In around 2010, while serving as the head of the finance department at the Taego Order of Korean Buddhism, I led the establishment of the "Nanuuri Volunteer Group," which focuses on overseas volunteer activities, with the thought that 'We should make efforts to help other countries from now on'. And We have actively participated in international relief efforts, such as restoring earthquake damage in Haiti, building schools for elementary school teachers in Laos, and installing well facilities in Cambodia."  He also explained, "In 2018, I became aware of the suffering of second-generation Lai Dai Han residents living in Vietnam and install water purifiers in the schools which Lai Dai Han children attend. Afterwards, I formed the 'Buddha Volunteer Group' by gathering the will to install water purification facilities in schools in Vietnam. We carried out overseas welfare sharing activities with the slogans of ‘By sharing the Buddha’s nectar with children, the Buddha’s mercy, which spreads happiness through love and forgiveness, flows here’ and ‘Let’s see the beautiful world while riding cool on our bikes’. 

Ven. Jin Seong has been promoting sharing activities in Dak Lak Province, Vietnam, which has a sisterhood relationship with Jeonbuk Province in 2018. Despite facing difficulties in traveling abroad due to the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, he never stops to keep this relationship by sending 5 million won worth of scholarships and 100 bicycles every year. Then, in November 2022, when the aftermath of COVID-19 had subsided, Ven. Jin Seong visited Vietnam and returned with an agreement to resume the installation of solar water purification facilities. As mentioned earlier, he kept his promise by visiting Vietnam in early March.

This is the fourth time that the installation of the water purification system has been carried out since 2018, and they have begun to accelerate the installation of the water purification system, which was temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ven. Jin Seong said, "This installation of the solar-powered water purification system is not just temporary support, but my long-cherished wish that can help local students and residents without any burden of electricity bills for a long time. In addition, I hope that this would be a way to repay the kindness for the help that Korea received in the past, and contribute to revitalizing private exchanges between Korea and Vietnam." He also added, "I plan to continue and expand such relationships with Vietnam in the future. My wish is to always think about and learn better ideas and ways for sharing, and not to stop volunteering and giving until the end of my life." I hope that more people can feel the value and happiness of sharing through these efforts of Ven. Jin Seong, and I would like to express my deep gratitude for precious relationships with him that will continue in the future.
