한의학에서 ‘유황’이 갖고 있는 입지는 다소 독특하다. 허준의 「동의보감」에서는 ‘유황은 열이 많고 독성이 강하나, 몸 안의 찬 기운을 몰아내어 양기를 돕는 한편, 심복의 딱딱하게 굳은 증상과 나쁜 기운을 다스린다’고 쓰여 있으며, 옛 약학서인 「본초강목」에서도 ‘유황은 몸의 신진대사를 돕는다’고 나와 있다. 다만 문제는, 이러한 유황이 치명적인 독소를 포함하고 있다는 점이다. 유황에 함유되어 있는 ‘비소’는 우리가 흔히 ‘독’을 떠올릴 때 가장 먼저 손에 꼽을 수 있는 성분으로, 0.2g의 비소를 섭취하면 즉사에 이를 수 있으며, 0.04g만 섭취해도 혀가 굳고 오장이 녹아내리는 맹독성을 뽐낸다. 시중에는 비소를 포함한 각종 독성 중금속 물질을 제거한 식이유황이 흔히 판매되고 있지만, 만약 독소가 제대로 제거되지 못했을 경우 복통이나 설사, 혈변을 유발하기도 하고, 피부 염증이나 탈모, 비소중독 등의 여파를 초래할 수도 있다. 이에 한의학에서는 오래 전부터 유황의 독성과 자극성을 없애는 동시에 치료 효능을 높이고자 ‘법제(法製)’라는 가공법을 연구해왔으며, 얼마나 뛰어난 기술을 갖고 있느냐에 따라 ‘법제유황’에 대한 평가 또한 크게 달라지곤 했다.
The position of ‘sulfur in oriental medicine is somewhat unique. Heo Jun's 「Dong-uibogam」 says, ’Sulfur has a lot of fever and is highly toxic, but it helps boost energy by driving out the cold energy in the body while controlling the stiff symptoms and bad energy of the abdomen,‘ and the old pharmaceutical book 「Boncho Gangmok」 also says, "Sulfur helps the metabolism of the body." However, the problem is that these sulfurs contain deadly toxins. Arsenic, contained in sulfur, is the first ingredient that can be counted in our hands when we think of ’poison,‘ and if we consume 0.2g of arsenic, it can lead to immediate death, and even 0.04g of it has the deadly poison of stiffening tongue and melting of the five organs. In markets, dietary sulfur that removes various toxic heavy metal substances, including arsenic, is commonly sold, but if toxins are not properly removed, it may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody excrement, and may cause skin inflammation, hair loss, and arsenic poisoning. Accordingly, oriental medicine has long studied a processing method called "non-toxic" to eliminate sulfur toxicity and irritation while increasing therapeutic efficacy, and the evaluation of ’non-toxic sulfur’ has also changed greatly depending on how excellent technology it has.
